George Eastman House Exhibitions

In winter 2007 George Eastman House undertakes a series of exhibitions and programs on events that address the role of photographs in our personal and collective experience of the most difficult aspects of the human condition: war and its aftermath, genocide, and famine.

    DARFUR/DARFUR

  • January 20 through April 22, 2007
© Michal Ronnen Safdie, 2004 In partnership with the DARFUR/DARFUR organization, George Eastman House launches this large-scale, multimedia exhibition depicting the crisis and genocide in Darfur. Events in Darfur, Sudan, since 2003 have resulted in the death or injury of more than 400,000 civilians. The exhibition was created to place these realties in the context of the region’s culture and to advocate for immediate and lasting peace. The displays include digitally projected images by photographers Lynsey Addario, Mark Brecke, Helene Caux, Ron Haviv, Paolo Pellegrin, Ryan Spencer Reed, Michal Ronnen Safdie, and Brian Steidle. The images are combined with Sudanese-inspired music and words. In addition, clips from several feature-length documentary films are on view in the gallery.

Reflections from the Heart: Photographs by David Seymour

  • January 20 through April 22, 2007
© David Seymour Estate/Magnum Photos A survey exhibition of 75 photographs taken by founding Magnum photographer David Seymour, also known as Chim, who was heralded as a photojournalist and editorial pictorialist. This retrospective is organized chronologically and showcases many of the photojournalistic black-and-white images for which Seymour is best known. His photographs were published in leading magazines from 1933 to 1956 (the year he was killed while documenting war). Many of Seymour’s best-known photos capture the many poignant and dramatic events of the 20th century, including postwar Europe. Also exhibited for the first time will be several of Seymour’s rare color images of famous personalities, such as Sophia Loren and Ingrid Bergman. Reflections from the Heart is organized by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in partnership with George Eastman House and the Corcoran Gallery of Art and made possible by the generous support of Ben Shneiderman with additional support from EPSON USA Inc.

    Ghosts in the Landscape

  • February 17 through May 20, 2007
© Craig J. Barber, 1998 An exhibition featuring recent platinum prints of Vietnam by former combat Marine Craig J. Barber, whose return to the land where he once fought resulted in a dreamlike and introspective study of place. (Barber photographed the locations where he fought as a teenager for 20 months.) He made the first of three visits in 1995 to the battered and distant country where he had come of age. This exhibition features 46 images from his travels to Vietnam, captured using a pinhole camera and 8”x10” film. Major sponsors for this exhibition are Bank of America and Dominion, with additional support from Bostick & Sullivan.
